Agnes Gibson Pruitt, 97, a resident of Penick Village, died on July 12, 2013 .
Born September 12, 1915 in Gibson, NC to William Ziba and Sarah Florence Gibson, she was the youngest of six children. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Calhoun Pruitt, her parents, and siblings, Willie Reese, Jack Gibson, Sarah McColman, Pete Gibson, and Virginia Hargrave.
Mrs. Pruitt attended Gibson schools, Queens College in Charlotte and made her debut at the Terpsichorean Club Ball in Raleigh in 1934. She worked briefly in Pennsylvania and Raleigh before returning to Gibson to manage her family's drugstore. After her marriage to Mr. Pruitt, a stock broker with Carolina Securities, she moved to Rockingham where they lived until their retirement to Southern Pines in 1986. Mrs. Pruitt grew up in the Gibson United Methodist Church but after marriage joined the Church of the Messiah in Rockingham and was a devoted member of the Episcopal Church for the remainder of her life. She later joined Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Southern Pines. Always active in the life of her church and community, she was honored by Richmond County Hospital for her many years of service as a volunteer. She was a member of the Rockingham Garden Club and Richmond County Music Society, serving as an officer in both. She and Mr. Pruitt were avid bridge players, world travelers, and members of Richmond Pines Country Club and the Rockingham Cotillion. Known for her excellent cooking skills, Mrs. Pruitt always enjoyed entertaining at home and at the family cottage at Myrtle Beach. She will be especially remembered for her great kindness and generosity to individuals and organizations.
She is survived by two nieces, Sara Jane Hargrave Pate and her husband, W. Daniel Pate of Southern Pines and Ann McColman Copeland and her husband, E. H. Copeland, Jr. of Charlotte, along with numerous great and great great nieces and nephews who were all very dear to her.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, July 17th at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Transfiguration at Penick Village.
A graveside service will be held on the same day at Richmond County Memorial Park in Rockingham at 4:30 p.m.
The family will receive friends after each service.
